Is Twitter Good For The Jews?

I just read an interesting story in the Forward that speaks both to the wordiness of Jews and how trends toward microblogging, particularly Twitter, may undermine the Jewish mind.

The basic premise of the argument goes something like this: Jews have always been people of the book, all scholarly discussions in the Midrash come back to this source, and to some degree, all 'Jewish genius' comes from this source as well, and the 'pilpul' of pulling every iota of meaning from a source. Without the Torah as the core source though, and without the careful, well-reasoned, and wordy output, the Jewish mind will deteriorate.

Um... not sure if I totally buy it. I see an entirely new generation of Yids who are connected..both in terms of Jewish identity, and in terms of the network. People who are building connections and making things happen.

Two examples taking place this evening are Michael Oren's talk, tonight at 560 Trinity in University City, which is being promoted through social media, and Kosha Dillz, the Jewish Rapper who performs tonight at Atomic Cowboy in Tower Grove. Kosha Dillz has basically been planning his entire tour using Twitter to connect with people, particularly Jews, around the country to help him book shows.

Are we losing the core content or are we finding new ways to engage and express?

Read the Forward's story here.

"The St. Lou Jew" Hosts CD Release Party for Zeda's Beat Box

St. Louis, MO-November 18, 2008- St. Louis' Jewish rock reggae sensation, Zeda's Beat Box celebrates the release of their second CD "Seven" at Cicero's on Friday December 19 at 6:30PM. Bloggers from The St. Lou Jew (www.thestloujew.com) will set the tone for the evening as they light the Sabbath candles. All in attendance will receive a free copy of the bands 8-song CD.

Zeda's Beat Box burst on to the local Jewish and rock scene earlier this year with the release of their 4-song EP "Kabbalat Shabbat." The CD received rave reviews by both Jewish and mainstream press and has been hailed as "Jewish music for the masses."

Zeda's Beat Box sets Jewish liturgy and original English lyrics to a unique blend of rock and reggae. The band's mix of Jewish tradition and modern music has landed them shows in both synagogues and night clubs. Their debut CD can be heard playing at the JCC, Jewish gift shops, and on local rock radio.

The band was formed in January 2007 by Dave Simon, the founder of Dave Simon's Rock School. To build the band, Simon recruited four teenagers who participate in Rock School's band program. Simon began writing songs for the band in December of 2006 under the guidance of Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose, Rabbi Dr. Neal Rose, and Cantor Sharon Nathanson of congregation B'nai Amoona.

Together We Hope

After a weekend full of food, friends, Bailey's, reunions, and more food, we are back in action!

Read on for an update on Maya Escobar, our favorite StlouJew artist.

It was election day, Maya was waiting in some of the longer lines, surrounded by eager, hopeful voters. She wanted to capture the environment and engage those around her. Maya and Carianne Noga, her colleague and frequent collaborator had the idea to take a bunch of tags and let people write their hopes on them. The tags were put on display for all to see.

Out of this spur-of-the-moment project came togetherwehope.com a simple site that allows people to write their hopes, immediate or long term, material, spiritual, idealistic or realistic.

The project has already started to take off, with an article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Maya and Carianne will be turning the tags into a public art installation in front of the University City Post Office, so hit up togetherwehope.com while there is still time and ensure that your hopes are heard.

Hurricaine Ike's St. Louis Devastation

Ike make its way powerfully through much of the Midwest, causing power outages in Cincinnati, flooding in Chicago, and a good deal of damage in our own back yard as well.

I don't know why this hasn't received much media play around town but...

Here is the pertinent info from the U City Manager
(http://mo-universitycity.civicplus.com/DocumentView.asp?DID=824)

On Sunday, 4.42 inches of rain fell in a very short period of time, causing flash flooding responsible for two fatalities, damage to hundreds of homes, and damage to city infrastructure and public facilities.
Thus far, the City condemned 275 homes; thirty have yet to be inspected, of the remaining homes, all but 10 single-family homes and 27 apartments have been cleared for re-entry. Assessments are underway to determine the full extent of the damage to public infrastructure and City-owned facilities. Public school buildings were damaged and are being assessed. The City and Red Cross are providing shelter and other emergency aide to flood victims. FEMA will arrive Friday morning for inspection.
Mayor Adams declared a State of Emergency on September 14, 2008. The declaration will be confirmed by City Council on September 22, 2008.

This Friday, September 19, from 7 AM to 1 PM at Centennial Commons, 7210 Olive Blvd (the location of the still existing Red Cross Shelter), there will be an aide station set up to provide special assistance to flood victims. The County Department of Public Health will provide tetanus shots to individuals seven years and older on a first come first serve basis. The Community Action Agency will be there to provide vouchers for food, clothes and transportation. There is a plan to have some legal aide assistance there as well. Read More......
